My boyfriend and I spent this year’s holiday exploring the island of Lanzarote, which offers a vast variety of unique experiences, and we made the most of it with a trip to the beaches of Fuerteventura. It’s a true paradise for nature and culture lovers. For what a small island Lanzarote is, it hides a lot of tourist attractions. You can lounge on one of the many beautiful beaches, enjoying the view of volcanoes and other natural formations that make you think you’ve arrived on a foreign planet. The best way to enjoy your stay on the island is to rent a car and explore it cross-country.
Fuerteventura
Southwest of Lanzarote is another of the Canary Islands—Fuerteventura. Here, you will find the longest coastline and many beautiful beaches with an azure-blue sea. But remember to consider the strong winds and the uncompromising African sun. After all, the name Fuerteventura literally means ‘strong wind’.
Dunes of Corralejo
Fuerteventura is an island easily accessible by car and conveniently reached by ferry in about 30 minutes. We did a day trip to explore the northern towns on the island. We took the ferry from Playa Blanca to the village of Corralejo. This is one of the most popular areas on the island. Just a short distance from this former fishing village is a vast, 11 km long stretch of sand dunes covering 30 km².
The dunes of Corralejo have been declared a national park. You’ll find miles of rolling sand and endless silence reminiscent of a full-fledged Saharan desert. Moreover, the beach at the foot of the dunes is so long that it’s virtually impossible to ever be overcrowded.
Popcorn Beach
The unique Popcorn Beach is just an hour’s walk from Corralejo or a few minutes by car along a dirt road. A beach whose rocks look like popcorn. They are dead white corals that have washed ashore and been ground into the shape of popcorn rosettes by the sea. This place has become popular mainly because of the photographs that fly worldwide. You can also enjoy a nice view of Lanzarote here. Although Popcorn Beach is beautiful, it could be better for swimming. The coastline is very rocky, and the waves are incredibly wild.
Fuerteventura Beaches
We spent the rest of the day on the beach, and in the evening, we took the last ferry back to Lanzarote. It was a wonderful holiday. If you ever vacation in Lanzarote, take advantage of this rewarding day trip to Fuerteventura.
