The Slovenian coastline spans just forty kilometers along the Adriatic Sea. Yet, local planners designed a world-class cycling infrastructure that larger coastal nations could easily envy. The car-free coastal route connecting Izola and Koper ranks among the most popular rides in the region. Riding this path every summer has become our favorite family tradition.
Izola to Koper: A Car-Free Coastal Paradise
Izola is a charming coastal town featuring a relaxed Mediterranean vibe, historic stone streets, and dedicated bike paths.
Our route begins near the San Simon resort, heading toward Koper. The path exits the town and transforms into a paved coastal boulevard completely closed to motor vehicles. Today, cyclists, inline skaters, runners, and walkers share this scenic seaside corridor exclusively.

The sparkling Adriatic Sea stretches to your left, while green hills rise to your right. You pedal effortlessly along the flat terrain, watching the kilometers fly by. Soon, the skyline of Koper appears on the horizon.
Before entering Koper, you pass clean municipal beaches and a public outdoor swimming pool. Adjacent sports facilities feature volleyball courts, basketball courts, and a large climbing wall right next to the local soccer stadium. Koper embraces an active lifestyle.

- The Parenzana Legacy: This coastal route follows sections of the historic Parenzana narrow-gauge railway. Between 1902 and 1935, steam trains connected Trieste in Italy with Poreč in Croatia.
- Škocjanski Zatok Reserve: This 122-hectare nature sanctuary represents the largest brackish wetland in Slovenia. It shelters nearly 260 bird species throughout the year.
- Camargue Horses: A herd of white Camargue horses grazes inside the wetlands. These hardy horses naturally maintain the meadow vegetation without heavy machinery.
Škocjanski Zatok: A Wetland Sanctuary by the Sea
The bike path curves past the sports complex toward one of the most remarkable nature spots on the Slovenian coast—Škocjanski Zatok Nature Reserve (Škocjanski zatok).
Spanning 122 hectares, this brackish wetland forms a unique coastal ecosystem. A 2-kilometer educational walking trail circles the sanctuary, equipped with wooden bird-watching blinds and observation towers. Visitors can observe wild birds, Camargue horses, and wetland wildlife without disturbing their natural habitat.
We parked our bicycles at the visitor center and walked along the nature trail. The peaceful atmosphere was filled only with birdsong and the gentle rustle of wind through the reeds.
The visitor center features a small outdoor cafe. We sat on the sunny terrace, enjoyed cold lemonades, and soaked in the quiet summer morning before completing the loop around the reserve.
Exploring Venetian Koper
While Koper serves as Slovenia’s primary commercial port, its historic old town captivates visitors with rich Venetian architecture.
We love wandering through its narrow cobblestone alleyways. In the historic core, we prefer walking our bikes side-by-side to enjoy the slow Mediterranean pace.
We stopped at our favorite cafe on the historic square for fresh espresso and a traditional local pastry. Afterward, we pedaled back along the same seaside path. With the sea glistening beside us, we arrived back in Izola after a comfortable 25-kilometer morning ride.
With the morning ride complete, we had the entire afternoon ahead of us to relax by the sea!the sea!
