The Raxalpen hiking area is known as the “roof of Vienna,” referring to the foothills of the Alps in Lower Austria. This region is a paradise for hikers, skiers, and mountain enthusiasts, and it’s an area we have yet to explore, unlike Schneeberg. The Raxalpen are also easily accessible from Slovakia, Hungary or Vienna and offer a variety of hiking trails, ranging from easy walks to challenging mountain hikes. My friends, who are familiar with these mountains from Semmering, recommended some interesting hiking trails and lesser-known spots that are not overly commercialized.
Raxalpen hiking
Crossing the Raxplateau – Route Ottohaus and Neue Seehütte
The Raxseilbahn cable car takes you to Raxplateau, where a comfortable route leads to the Ottohaus hut. From here, you can take a circular hike through the Neue Seehütte and admire the views of the ridge and the deep valleys.
Duration: 4-5 hours (circuit)
Ottohaus is famous for its traditional Austrian food. Along the way, you will see the diverse flora of the Alpine meadows, especially in spring and early summer.
Gsolhirnsteig – Ridge Adventure Trail
The ascent to Rax via the Gsolhirnsteig ridge is one of the lesser-known but beautiful routes. It is more challenging, with rocky sections, but not too technical.
Duration: 6-7 hours (round trip).
The panoramic views of the Schneeberg massif and the Semmering valley will get you going. You can also return via an alternative route via the Teufelsbadstube (Devil’s Bath).
Wachthüttelkamm – A secluded and quiet hike
This lesser-known trail leads from Hirschwang an der Rax and passes through beautiful forests and rock sections to the Wachthüttelkamm ridge. The route ends at Raxplateau, where you can continue as your fitness allows.
Duration: 5-6 hours (one way).
The route is quieter, off the main hiking trails. Along the way, you will encounter springs and small waterfalls.
Raxalpen Hiking in Lower Austria: Tips for Exploring Lesser-Known Locations
Weichtalklamm
This narrow gorge features ladders, ropes, and bridges that traverse dramatic rock formations. It serves as a more accessible alternative to the ferry experience, making it suitable for more experienced hikers.
Naturpark Hohe Wand
This beautiful nature park offers various viewing platforms and easier hiking routes. The main attraction is the “Skywalk,” a platform that extends out over the cliff and provides stunning panoramic views.
Semmeringbahn
This UNESCO-listed railway offers breathtaking scenery and is a must-see for visitors to the region. Although not a classic hike, the Semmeringbahn is a technical and historical gem you can combine with short hikes in the surrounding area (e.g. to the 20-Schilling-Blick viewpoint).
Prein an der Rax – Hidden trails
The small village is an ideal starting point for easy hikes on the edge of the Rax, away from the busy towns.
Practical Tips for Hiking
- Season: The best months for hiking are from May to October. Be aware that the cable cars and main trails can get crowded during the summer months.
- Equipment: Most trails require good footwear, layered clothing, and plenty of water. For more challenging routes, such as the Fadensteig, it is advisable to hike with an experienced guide.
- Food: Most mountain huts serve excellent meals, so you don’t need to carry large amounts of food. Be sure to try local specialties like Kaiserschmarrn and Gulaschsuppe.
