When audiophiles talk about world-class high-end sound, their eyes don’t just turn to London, Tokyo, or New York. They also look at Prešov, a historic city in eastern Slovakia. Prešov is home to Canor Audio.
Global audiophile communities know Canor as an uncompromising specialist in vacuum tubes, massive integrated amplifiers, CD players, and precision DACs.
We visited Canor’s manufacturing facility once again. The company recently entered the rapidly growing headphone market, introducing a brand-new transistor headphone amplifier designed for serious listeners.
Here is our exclusive report from the factory floor, featuring insights from Canor’s engineering team and a long-time customer.
Why Headphones? Making Audio a Personal Ritual
The way people listen to music is evolving rapidly. While fast-paced digital streaming dominates daily life, the headphone market is experiencing a massive renaissance. Music lovers no longer want background noise. They want a deep, immersive, high-resolution analog experience.
Canor responded directly to requests from customers and international distributors worldwide.
Vinylworld: When did you first decide to develop a dedicated headphone amplifier?
Igor (Canor): “It started about a year and a half ago. We noticed headphones moving strongly into the spotlight. New headphone brands and flagship models were emerging everywhere. We realized a headphone amplifier is essentially a high-precision preamplifier with extra power output. We adapted our proven preamplifier circuit to deliver clean, effortless power capable of driving even the most demanding planar magnetic headphones on the market.”
Transistor Architecture: An Accessible Entry to “Canor Sound”
While Canor’s acoustic laboratories built their reputation on glowing vacuum tubes, this new headphone amplifier features a solid-state transistor architecture. The goal was simple: make high-end sound accessible to a broader audience.
What should a prospective customer expect from this new component?
Igor (Canor): “Our primary goal was to offer customers a gateway to the iconic ‘Canor sound’ at a more accessible price point. Many audiophiles previously viewed Canor strictly as a maker of massive, heavy tube equipment. This transistor design lowers the cost barrier significantly. We may explore a pure tube headphone amplifier in the future, but bringing our signature sound signature into this growing segment was our main priority.”
Did your international distribution partners push for this step?
“Absolutely. Our partners around the world requested a dedicated headphone component to expand our product portfolio for modern listeners.”
Reference Tuning: Ears Over Instruments
Developing high-end audio gear in Prešov involves far more than laboratory measurements. Engineers spend hundreds of hours conducting critical listening sessions on the world’s finest headphones.
Which headphones did you use to fine-tune the final sound signature?
Igor (Canor): “We tested numerous flagship models. Our primary reference standard is manufactured by HiFiMAN. While a customer’s choice depends on their personal budget, we use the flagship HiFiMAN Susvara as our ultimate benchmark during development.”
What is the single strongest argument for choosing this amplifier?
“Technical specifications on paper are great, but the ultimate argument is always personal listening. You cannot describe sound signature in a product catalog. You simply have to put on the headphones and listen for yourself.”

A Vinylworld’s Perspective: Replacing a Full-Sized Stereo System
While engineering tells one half of the story, we also interviewed a long-time Canor customer at the factory listening room. How does a fan of massive floor-standing speakers become a headphone enthusiast?
From Living Room Compromises to Intimate Detail
The journey toward headphone listening often begins with a simple need for domestic peace.
As a long-time customer of traditional Hi-Fi setups, how did you transition to headphones?
Vinylworld: “It started when my wife gently mentioned that my late-night listening in the living room was disturbing her sleep. I decided to buy a pair of headphones. I borrowed a high-end planar magnetic model from a friend, and the sound was astonishingly detailed and immersive. I barely touched my main speaker setup after that! However, I needed a high-performance amplifier with RCA inputs to connect my CD player or vinyl LP. I called Canor directly, and they revealed they were quietly developing a dedicated headphone amplifier.”
Emotion and Detail at a Fraction of the Cost
Comparing a massive traditional stereo system to the new headphone setup delivered a surprising realization.
What were your first impressions during your initial listening session?
Vinylworld: “I was completely blown away. My full-sized living room system worth tens of thousands of euros sounded less spacious, less detailed, and less emotional than this headphone setup—especially with acoustic music. You hear every breath of the vocalist and the natural resonance of instrument bodies. The dynamic punch on rock and pop tracks is incredible. With this amplifier and great headphones, you basically get a ‘mobile listening room’ that costs a fraction of a full-sized speaker setup.”
Everyday Flexibility and Desktop Comfort
The real advantage of a high-end headphone setup lies in its sheer practical convenience. You no longer need an acoustically treated room or heavy speaker stands.
What do you see as the biggest practical advantage?
Vinylworld: “Flexibility. When you want reference sound from traditional speakers, you cannot run 5-meter cables from the living room to your bedside table. I can place this amplifier right on my nightstand, plug in a streamer, and enjoy top-tier audio. It is equally fantastic for office professionals who want to block out background noise and focus without disturbing colleagues. The connectivity is excellent too, offering digital inputs alongside analog RCA and balanced XLR connections.”
Looking Ahead: A Compact Audio Stack
The engineering team in Prešov hints that this headphone amplifier represents just the beginning of a new compact series.
Canor is already planning a matching power amplifier for desktop speakers, allowing the headphone unit to function as a full preamplifier. A matching network streamer is also in development. This will create an elegant, ultra-compact high-end audio stack capable of competing on the global stage.
Canor Audio proves that genuine craftsmanship, passion for music, and world-class engineering thrive in Slovakia. If you love music and seek a deeper connection to your favorite tracks, give reference headphone listening a try. Your ears will thank you!
