What is Paper good for? The Importance of Paper – from Toilet rolls to Calligraphy

Do you appreciate the importance of paper? Take toilet paper, for instance – thin, fragile, yet an irreplaceable companion in our daily lives. Without it, we’d be like a fish out of water. Or more precisely, a person on the toilet with no paper. Just imagine!

Importance of Paper

And what about paper money? Without it, we’d either have to carry sacks of coins like medieval merchants or, in the worst case (having no money at all), even a cardboard box under a bridge might look cozy. Picture a world without banknotes. How would you pay for all the paper products you so desperately need?

Do you travel? Imagine a flight without paper bags – where would your stomach’s contents go during turbulence? Or a fast food kiosk without napkins – would you eat a ketchup-drenched burger like a caveman? Christmas presents without wrapping paper would be ruined before they’re even unwrapped! And what about the cinema or theatre with no printed tickets – how would you prove you paid to see the worst movie of the year?

Paper in everyday life

Shopping centres and mailboxes without paper flyers? How would you know about the latest carrot discounts at your local supermarket? Even school without cheat sheets on crumpled paper would lose its rebellious charm. And newsstands – does anyone still read actual newspapers?

Johny's effective purchase underscores the importance of paper today
Johny’s effective purchase underscores the importance of paper today

Johnny, a friend of mine, uses so many kitchen paper towels on trips that he could wrap an entire house with them. He buys only the jumbo packs. He mops up every greasy stain in sight. Maybe he thinks he’s saving forests that way…

And those mountains of cardboard from courier deliveries! Who would’ve thought that ordering socks online contributes to Amazon deforestation? Let’s not forget politicians – where would they be without their paper promises? What would they feed voters before elections? On the bright side, men’s lives might be simpler. No paper filters and vacuum bags would mean no more vacuuming. And imagine an office without paperclips – what would we fidget with during those endless meetings?

I’m also nostalgic for the postcard era. Now we send emojis and GIFs – because nothing says “Thinking of you” like a dancing banana!

An Ode to Paper?

Paper isn’t just a material – it’s the lifeline of our civilization! Books – does anyone still read them? Without books, we’d be back in the Stone Age, a time of ignorance and darkness. Then again, considering how many people believe in flat Earth theories, lizard overlords, anti-vax conspiracies, or chemtrails…

The Magic of Handwriting

But for me, what matters most is writing with a fountain pen. Ink on paper. When a good pen glides across smooth paper, it’s like conducting a symphony of thoughts. Every stroke is a dance of creativity, every line a bridge between mind and reality.

Recently, my son – a typical IT guy of his generation – admitted he struggles to write by hand. He types so much that he’s lost his motor coordination. That’s exactly why handwriting is essential – it develops fine motor skills, which our keyboard-weary fingers desperately need.

What Handwriting Gives Me

But it’s more than that. Writing by hand helps me generate ideas more fluently than typing or dictating. It’s like opening the floodgates of creativity and inspiration. No blinking cursor, no distracting notifications – just me, my pen, and infinite possibilities.

Writing calms me, gives me confidence, and acts as mental hygiene. In today’s digital world, it’s a return to essence, to what makes us human. It’s a path to self-discovery, inner peace, and a deeper connection with oneself.

That’s why I’ve started investing in calligraphy nibs and pens. Every letter becomes a tiny work of art, every sentence a visual poem. It’s moving meditation, where aesthetics meet meaning.

So let’s pick up a pen, let the ink flow, and rediscover the beauty and power of the written word. Because in every stroke of the pen lies the chance to create something unrepeatable. The value of paper is in its endurance – far longer than any tweet or status update. Writing by hand is not just a skill – it’s the art of living more fully, deeply, and creatively.
