The Low Tatras, Slovakia are a dreamlike destination for nature lovers and hikers—a place to escape the chaos of everyday life. The two-day trek through the ridge of Low Tatras offers a rare chance to witness both sunset and sunrise in the heart of these mountains.

Čertovica: The Journey Begins
Our adventure started at the well-known Čertovica mountain pass, energized and ready to go. After a morning coffee at a local lodge, we set off.
The initial climb, a steep path alongside a ski slope, quickly reminded us that this would be no walk in the park. As we gained elevation, the views became increasingly breathtaking. The trail followed the ridge, revealing vast panoramas of the surrounding peaks.
However, caution was key—slippery snow and icy patches made every step a challenge. The crisp mountain air was both refreshing and demanding. Yet, we had the entire ridge to ourselves. Not a single other hiker in sight.

M. R. Štefánik Mountain Hut: A Sunset to Remember
Upon reaching the M. R. Štefánik Hut, we settled in and enjoyed a well-deserved lunch. As the afternoon faded, we gathered outside, waiting for the magic of sunset.
The sun slowly dipped behind the mountains, casting a golden glow over the peaks. The sky transformed into deep shades of orange and pink, while the distant ridges disappeared into the darkening horizon.
There’s something special about watching the sunset in the mountains—far from the noise of the city, surrounded only by nature’s raw beauty. It’s a moment of pure serenity, one that stays with you long after you’ve left.

As night fell, there was nothing better than sitting in cottage by the crackling fireplace in the hut, sipping a warm cup of tea, and letting the exhaustion of the day melt away. A perfect ending to the first day.
Summiting Ďumbier at Sunrise
The next morning, we had one clear goal: catching the sunrise from Ďumbier, the highest peak of the Low Tatras.
An hour-long, steep ascent brought us to the summit just in time for the first glimmer of daylight. The world seemed to pause. The sky gradually shifted from deep blue to fiery hues of orange, pink, and gold. The sun crept over the horizon, illuminating the frozen landscape in warm, golden light.

Standing there, smiles on our faces, we felt a sense of accomplishment. Waking up early, braving the cold, and pushing through the climb was worth it. Some of the most beautiful moments in life are the ones you have to earn.
After soaking in the sunrise, we continued toward Chopok, the second-highest peak in the Low Tatras, where our crossing from Čertovica to Demänovská Valley would come to an end.
Chopok & The Final Descent

The trail between Ďumbier and Chopok is one of the most scenic in the region. The landscape is like a painting—an endless masterpiece of rugged peaks and untouched wilderness.
At the summit of Chopok, we took a well-earned breakfast break before beginning the long descent into Demänovská Valley.
What the Low Tatras Gave Us
This two-day trek through the ridge of Low Tatras from Ćertovica do Demänovská Valley wasn’t just about the physical challenge. It was about connection—with nature, with the mountains, and with the simple, breathtaking moments that stay in your heart forever.
Because in the mountains, it’s not just about reaching the destination. It’s about everything you feel along the way.
