Muscat, where luxury meets History and the Scent of the Sea

Oman is a land of contrasts, and its capital, Muscat, is the perfect example of that. Luxury hotels and the aroma of frankincense, ancient forts and modern shopping malls – it’s all here, blending harmoniously. A few years ago, we had the privilege of visiting this fascinating city. Our trip was all about the beauty of the coastline, exploring local cuisine and traditions, and discovering how to survive in the tropical heat without melting into the pavement.

Grand Hyatt: Sultan-like Comfort for Ordinary Mortals

Our base of operations? The Grand Hyatt. From the moment we stepped into the lobby, we felt like royalty. Massive chandeliers, marble floors, and the scent of fresh flowers. And the breakfasts! Back home, yogurt and coffee are enough, but here, we were spoiled with omelets, exotic fruits, and croissants that would make any Parisian chef proud. Some of us even gained a few pounds after a few days.

But the luxury didn’t stop at the hotel. Sultan Qaboos, the man who shaped Oman for decades, ensured the country radiated grandeur. In Muscat, you’ll find wide boulevards, manicured gardens, and architecture worthy of postcards. If there were a competition for the cleanest capital city in the world, Muscat would be a serious contender.

Muscat: History vs. Modern Life

Muscat has a charm that’s hard to match. On one hand, there are historical forts like Al Jalali and Al Mirani, standing guard over the harbor and reminding us of the days when Portuguese sailors roamed these waters. On the other hand, you have modern landmarks like the Opera House, where traditional Omani architecture meets contemporary design.

The streets of Muscat are peaceful and pristine. While Omanis enjoy a relaxed lifestyle steeped in tradition, the bulk of the work in the city is done by expats. These are the people maintaining the gardens, running the hotels, and driving the taxis. Meanwhile, Omanis prefer to spend their time with family, either picnicking or enjoying coffee and dates.

Gastronomy: Frankincense, Spices, and a Touch of Exotic

Omani cuisine is like the country itself – rich, diverse, and full of surprises. We tried shuwa, a slow-cooked lamb dish prepared in underground ovens. The wait was worth it – the meat was tender and bursting with flavor. And then there’s the omnipresent scent of frankincense, which seems to accompany every meal. Even the spice markets in Mutrah are filled with its intoxicating aroma.

And the coffee? Omanis brew it light, flavored with cardamom, and always serve it with dates. Our attempt to keep up with local culture led to a point where the fifth cup of coffee was consumed purely out of politeness.

Dolphins and Cliffs: The Treasures of the Coast

Muscat stretches along the coast of the Arabian Sea, offering breathtaking views of rocky cliffs rising dramatically above the water. We took a boat trip to watch dolphins, and these playful sea performers didn’t disappoint, leaping and spinning as though thrilled to have an audience.

While out at sea, we couldn’t resist snorkeling. Beneath the surface, a vibrant underwater world of coral and colorful fish awaited us. Every breath through the snorkel was a reminder that Oman isn’t just about mountains and deserts but also about its stunning marine beauty.

A Place Where Time Slows Down

Muscat isn’t a city that overwhelms you with noise and chaos. Here, time flows gently. Omanis aren’t in a hurry; they enjoy life in peace and harmony. The coastline, markets, forts, and the scent of frankincense leave you feeling as if you’ve stepped into another world.

Friendship

And if you feel like indulging in a bit of luxury, the Grand Hyatt and its royal breakfasts are at your service. Oman, and especially Muscat, will teach you that history, tradition, and modern luxury can coexist in perfect balance.

P.S.: Don’t forget the dolphins – they’re worth it!
