On our journey to San Francisco, we couldn’t miss the chance to visit two of the most fascinating lakes on the West Coast—Mono Lake and Lake Tahoe. These natural U.S. wonders captivate with their unique features, rich histories, and even myths, leaving an unforgettable impression.
Lake Tahoe
In contrast to Mono Lake’s raw, ancient vibe, Lake Tahoe, located on the western side of the Sierra Nevada, exudes alpine elegance. At an elevation of 1,897 meters, this crystal-clear lake formed approximately two million years ago. It is the second deepest lake in the United States (after Crater Lake), with a maximum depth of 501 meters.
A Panorama That Takes Your Breath Away
Lake Tahoe is famed for its pristine waters and the dramatic mountain ranges that surround it. The lake’s shores provide the perfect backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts year-round. Winter attracts skiers and snowboarders, while summer draws hikers, bikers, swimmers, and sailing enthusiasts.

The Legend of Tessie: Tahoe’s Nessie
Lake Tahoe’s deep waters have given rise to the legend of “Tessie”, an alleged lake monster. Stories of this mysterious creature date back to the 19th century. While there’s no evidence of its existence, the tale adds a layer of intrigue to Tahoe’s serene beauty.
A Fascinating Fact
Lake Tahoe’s waters are so pure that visibility reaches up to 20 meters below the surface. This remarkable clarity is a result of strict environmental protections and the lake’s unique composition.
Our Experience: From Salt to Snow
Our journey offered a striking contrast between these two lakes. Mono Lake stunned us with its raw, otherworldly landscapes, while Lake Tahoe provided peace and alpine charm.
At Mono Lake, we waded through icy crusts and marveled at the tufas, which looked like alien sculptures. Zdeňak, ever the adventurer, managed to soak his sneakers and quipped: “This isn’t a lake—it’s a salty ice rink!”
At Lake Tahoe, the mood shifted entirely. We basked in the calm, admiring the snow-covered peaks surrounding the crystal-clear water. We stopped at a beach where sightseeing boats were still cruising in January. Zdeňek gazed out at the lake and declared: “I’d build a cabin here—just skip the casinos, please!”

Mono Lake and Lake Tahoe offer vastly different experiences of the natural beauty of the West Coast. One is raw and ancient, the other refined and majestic. Both, however, hold a unique charm that’s worth exploring.
