Goodbye Summer at Lake Neusiedl: A Boat, Bikes, and Burgenland Bliss

Summer nostalgia? The cure is called Lake Neusiedl in Austria. End of August, end of summer… and suddenly nostalgia hits like a freight train. You want to book a flight south, right? But hold on—why bother when Lake Neusiedl is less than an hour away by car?
This lake has it all: families with kids, romantics, cyclists, and yes—even lazy “picnic warriors” like us, chasing seaside vibes without leaving Austria.

Getting Lake Neusiedl (and why we skip the highway)

The math is simple: Bratislava → 50 km → lake. Highway? Nope. We go old school, via Parndorf—because what’s a trip without passing Slovakia’s favorite shopping battlefield? From there it’s straight to Neusiedl am See and then into Breitenbrunn, our starting point.

Parking? €12 for the whole day. Bonus: no extra beach entry fee.

Breitenbrunn beach: Almost the Riviera

This beach feels fresh, clean, almost Mediterranean. And here’s the kicker: in summer a boat departs twice a day to Podersdorf. If you want to catch it, better set your alarm.

We rolled in right on time for the 10 a.m. ride. A disciplined group of retirees with bikes was already lined up like Swiss watches. Captain and deckhand arrived, stacked the bikes on board, and off we went.

Tickets? €15 per person, bikes free, e-bikes +€2. Payment directly to the captain—no apps, no online booking. Old-school vibes.

A boat that smells like freedom

The ride takes around 40 minutes, but it feels like being on a summer holiday by the sea. Sure, the water isn’t turquoise, and land is always in sight, but the vibe is unbeatable. I swear it felt like summer’s last dance.

Podersdorf: Lighthouse and bikes in action

We docked right by Podersdorf’s iconic lighthouse. Captain unloaded our bikes and off we went, straight onto the cycling path.

The route goes through Neusiedl am See, along the train tracks, and then between vineyards. Jois and Winden tempted us with tiny wineries, but somehow we resisted (miracle!). Eventually, we rolled back into Breitenbrunn—straight into a beach bar reward.

A short trip, but endless good vibes

Sun, water, boat, bike. Everything you need for a perfect farewell to summer. The trip is short, but the memories are huge. And yes—we do it almost every year. Because Lake Neusiedl never gets old.
