Rome – allegedly the most beautiful city in Europe. So we went back to check if that claim still holds water. This time, alongside the classics – the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and the Spanish Steps – we added something different. Loud, electric, and very much alive: Diamond League Rome 2025.

Classical Rome vs. Contemporary Thrills
Breathing in the air of ancient history is nice, but we were also looking for something that vibrates in the now. Enter Stadio Olimpico – Rome’s colossal stage of sport. That’s where the latest leg of the Diamond League, a traveling athletics extravaganza since 2010, was happening.
Getting to Stadio Olimpico without the metro? Do it the Roman way – on foot
Spoiler: there’s no metro station at the stadium. Tram no. 2, which should’ve taken us there, decided to take a holiday that day. Buses? Too unpredictable. So we walked. From the Vatican, via Viale Angelico, straight and steady. Forty-five minutes, just like Google Maps promised. And then – the dome of the stadium appeared. We’d made it.

A stadium built for history – and moments like this
Stadio Olimpico has seen it all: the 1960 Olympics, World Cup matches, European Championships, UEFA finals… But tonight, it belonged to athletics. Diamond League Rome 2025 lit up the arena.
The evening started with juniors, para-athletes, and masters races – not just warm-ups, but full of energy. The 12 × 200 m mixed relay? Absolute fire. Then came the headliners.
Records, legends, and Gianmarco Tamberi
Women’s pole vault opened the main program. We were seated with the perfect view of the high jump sector – and it turned out to be the jackpot. Personal bests, season’s bests, national records (cue the Italian crowd going wild) – all in one evening.

And then came Gianmarco Tamberi. Italy’s rock star of high jump. Entering with mismatched socks and shoes, clowning around from start to finish, yet still magnetic. He didn’t clear 2.20 m – a bitter moment for the home crowd. But instead of sulking, he became the show. Signing autographs, taking selfies, chatting with fans. Then, back on the field, cheering on his rivals louder than anyone. That’s what you call a true athlete.
Woo wins, and we cheer like locals
The high jump gold went to Woo Sang-hyeok of South Korea – and we were on our feet. Not only because he flies like a gazelle, but because he also triumphed at the Banská Bystrica high jump meet. And that final leap, under the eyes (and voice) of Tamberi, brought the night to a perfect close.

Late night in Rome, still glowing
With the final event wrapping up just before midnight, we grabbed an Uber back to the hotel. Our legs were done, but our minds were still racing. In two weeks, we’re heading to Golden Spike in Ostrava. New city, same adrenaline. But that’s another story.
